SongBuilder Studios Recording Workshops

Learn to write, record, and produce a song from the ground up.

Here’s what we’ll cover

Module 1:

Recording Techniques

Get hands-on with the tools and methods professionals use to capture great performances. This module covers microphone selection and placement, signal flow, gain staging, and the setup choices that separate a clean, usable take from a muddy one. You'll leave with a practical understanding of how to record vocals and instruments the right way, the first time.

Module 3: Melody, Theory & Song Structure

Learn how great songs are built. This module breaks down melody writing, basic music theory, and the structural elements that make a song work, verse, chorus, bridge, and everything in between. You'll come away with a clearer sense of how to shape an idea into a complete, compelling song.

Sit in on a real session!

After the training block, you'll step into the studio for a 2 hour live recording session with a working artist, watching a real record come together from the inside. You'll see how a producer directs a session, how a mix takes shape in real time, and how the day's lessons in recording technique, DAW work, and mixing actually play out under studio pressure. The session closes with a conversation on distribution and sync licensing, connecting what you just watched to how songs actually get placed and earn.

Module 2:

DAW & Plug-In Fundamentals

Get comfortable inside a professional recording environment. This module walks through the core functions of a digital audio workstation, from navigating sessions and organizing tracks to using essential plug-ins for editing, effects, and processing. You'll build the foundation needed to work efficiently in any modern studio setup.

Module 4: Mixing & Mastering

Discover how a mix comes together and how a final master gets it release-ready. This module covers balancing levels, EQ, compression, and the key decisions that shape a song's final sound, along with an introduction to mastering for distribution. You'll understand what happens in the final stages of production and why it matters.

Michelle Lockey: Sync Clarity

As part of the workshop, each participant receives a $100 credit toward a Sync Clarity consultation with Michelle Lockey, a sync licensing expert whose placements include Young Sheldon, The Fosters, Reign, Longmire, and other film and TV credits. In a one-on-one session, Michelle reviews three of your songs, discusses your goals, and builds a personalized action plan for pursuing sync licensing, along with essential resources like split sheet contracts and tracking spreadsheets, plus recommendations on industry conferences and networking groups to help you break into the space.
